What to know

  1. 01

Melasma is not the same as sun spots

Melasma commonly appears as patches, often on the face. Sun exposure, hormonal influences and other factors may contribute. Sun spots and marks left after inflammation can require a different approach. New or changing pigmented lesions need medical assessment rather than cosmetic treatment.

  2. 02

    Start with an assessment

Discuss when the pigmentation began, triggers, previous treatments, current skin care, medication and recent sun exposure. Your provider can explain the limits of cosmetic treatment and when assessment by a physician or dermatologist is appropriate.

  3. 03

    Skin care and sun protection

Consistent broad-spectrum sun protection and a suitable skin-care routine are important parts of pigmentation care. Avoid adding several strong products at once or choosing an aggressive treatment before your skin has been assessed.

  4. 04

    Considering clinic treatments

For suitable concerns, an individualized plan may include professional skin care or chemical peels. IPL may be considered for selected sun-related spots, but it is not a default treatment for melasma and can worsen pigmentation in some circumstances. Suitability depends on the diagnosis, skin tone, treatment history and current skin condition.

  5. 05

    Set realistic expectations

Pigmentation can recur, and maintenance may be needed. Improvement is not guaranteed. Discuss possible irritation, post-inflammatory pigmentation, recovery and ongoing care before choosing a procedure.
